Life Coach & Certified Yoga Instructor
On September 11, 2015, I was diagnosed with HIV. This day, I felt as though the ground below me had suddenly vanished, and I was left to fend for myself. I visited some dark places mentally, emotionally, and eventually withdrew from almost everyone in my life.
As I began to rebuild, I found three things that were crucial to my healing. The first crucial step was social structures, in the form of a close support network; this came in the form of a yoga teacher training I was in at the time. On April 24, 2016, I found enough safe space that I made a declaration to my fellow teachers to remove my own shame around HIV and to be a voice for those that have not yet found theirs. I stood up and said out loud, with a shaky voice, "I am a STAND for overcoming obstacles and changing perceptions of people with HIV." This was the beginning of a new journey for me.
The second crucial step is movement. When processing any emotional, physical, or mental trauma, we often overlook the effects on the body and how the body stores
trauma. We begin to brace against life, lose mobility or balance, and we start to experience an increase in pain (both chronic and acute). I have personally found healing
through yoga, weightlifting, and hiking. However, every individual has their own unique set of activities that can get them moving again and allows the body to release
The final crucial step faces mortality in all its forms. My HIV diagnosis was the first time I felt my mortality. It allowed me to see more clearly what is essential and worthy of the time I have. Mortality made it possible to start cleaning out the things that are not serving me or contribute to my purpose.
These crucial steps have become pillars that have helped me find a foundation to stand and build on, become more of who I am, and prosper as I continue to grow. The things I have learned during my journey are invaluable and continue to shape me into a stronger person; I would not change a thing.
I work with clients to create a unique combination of life coaching, movement, and meditation to encourage self-discovery and growth. By utilizing mind and body techniques, together, we will form a well-balanced, individualized, and personal plan that integrates self-reflection and positive progression. Ultimately, we will work through, encircle, and look at the pillars as they relate to each individual.
